Don't put all your eggs in the Facebook basketThere is no stopping Facebook at this point, no doubt about it. And with that also comes the increasing number of brands and companies engaging in the creation and management of Pages (or “Fan Pages” as they used to be known).

We even hear about companies not having websites anymore to migrate all their efforts to Facebook. Okay, those are extreme cases but you can’t deny that at least once you heard about it.

The problem is we are jumping in the wagon as we did back in the day when we decided that we needed a website because our competitors had one. We ended up building millions of digital brochures that did nothing but get you an “online presence”. What if Facebook Pages are not all that? What if they don’t work as well as we think they do?

Should you start spending time on StumbleUpon now that reports claim it represents more than 50% of the social media traffic and has passed Facebook to the #1 spot?

Not really. Let’s take a second to understand if StumbleUpon can really send you more traffic, what kind of traffic and I’ll also give you 3 quick tips to help you increase traffic to your site.

What, you thought StumbleUpon was dead?

StumbleUpon is very much alive. In March 2011 Mashable reported 15 million users and new signups of around 500k per month. Those are huge numbers, how many services do you know that get half a million signups per month?

Social FridayWelcome to Week 4 of the Social Friday Series from SocialMouths, I’m glad you’re here!

The week, as it has been for the last month, has been taken by conversations about Google Plus. You know how we are, we love to predict the future… The only news that got a little attention besides G+ was the US launch of Spotify yesterday.

But there was a question this week that I thought was kind of crazy, then it made me realize that people have different concerns and some people actually think this, the question was “what’s gonna happen to Facebook?” and my answer was this: “Nothing”. Sure, Likes are down, people are actually spending less time and the launch of G+ made it look like old technology BUT, competition is good and the result of that is usually more quality and more value for the end-user.

How to write a viral postIs it possible to plan and write a blog post to reach a precise amount of exposure, engagement or traffic?

Without Jennifer Aniston?

Of course it is possible, if you pay close attention to your blog performance, the industry, and how the blogosphere behaves, you can actually anticipate what kind of exposure each blog will get. If you promote all your content the same way, you will still know based purely on the type of content you’re about to drop.

If you have been blogging for a while, I bet you can tell the different kinds of posts you publish and which ones perform better without even looking at the stats. Do the exercise.

Review Of Your Blog And Social Media by SocialMouthsYes, it’s that time again. Time to give away stuff here at SocialMouths. Time to accumulate some good Karma credits.

If you have been reading SocialMouths for a while, you probably noticed that I like giving stuff away from time to time. Today I’ll take the opportunity to promote one of my new services, a Review Of Your Blog And Social Media. Even tough this was not listed as a service before, I’m often asked to review blogs, Facebook Pages and social media strategies in general so, I decided to officially offer it to my readers.

This is also a good way to thank you all because SocialMouths just finished October with an all-time high in traffic, double its subscriptions, had the lowest bounce rate in the history of humanity and for the first time in one year, the number one source of traffic was “Google Organic” (not sure what that means yet since I don’t pay much attention to SEO in this blog).

Anyways, back to you. Let’s go over what the prize includes, how the contest works and the requirements…

The point of this type of review is that we sometimes get stuck in one way of doing things, we put in the hard work over long hours trying to be successful in our social media and blogging efforts and we can’t seem to get ahead in the game. Those are the times when we need an outsider to come in and give us a good reality check, a constructive one of course. Getting somebody else’s perspective can help us unstuck and adjust our strategy. Even better if we get somebody with experience, with a share of success as well as failure under his belt to point out specifics.

Are Numbers Important In Social Media?Followers, Likes, Retweets, Subscribers… Is any of this stuff important? I’m sure you’ve listened to both sides, “get more followers” and “numbers are not important”.

There is a lot of noise on both sides, people telling you that numbers are important are usually trying to sell you some kind of software and people telling you they’re not, have 50k followers and get retweeted like crazy. So which one is it?

I’m going to tell you when and why numbers are important, or not.

Let’s take it step by step…

Business Objectives

First of all, the most important thing is that you understand what your business objectives are and how they translate into online goals. That will make the difference and you will be able to determine if numbers, either high or low, are important for your business AND, if it’s relevant to display them on your site/blog.

Profit Anyone?

How do these numbers affect your bottom line? most likely not directly, having higher Retweets than your direct competitor means nothing on the front-end. Having a bigger influence over that same competitor could mean everything and Retweets, Likes and RSS subscribers could be part of that.

20 Blogs to follow if you want to succeed onlineBeing successful online requires that you beat a pretty long learning curve and while I try to contribute with my 2 cents, there are amazing bloggers out there that you should be reading on a regular basis.

These people put their amazing talent and knowledge into blog content and deliver it to their online communities week after week.

I have to advise you that if you see that I’m not going with the obvious is for 2 reasons, one because I like helping you discover stuff that you might have missed (there is just too much content out there…) and two, not that I don’t occasionally read the usual suspects, but this is the stuff I visit frequently. Also let me say that this is not a ranking so don’t pay attention to the order.

Measuring Social Media ImpactAre you showing up or are you making an impact?

You can enter a room full of people and be completely invisible. Translated to online marketing that will be like setting up a static website and leave it there to act as a digital business card and that my friends, it’s soooo ten years ago.

The truth is that a company is having an impact either way, intended or unintended, even by being absent. Can you measure impact? Today I’m rolling out the 4th installment of the series “Snapshot Of Your Social Media Presence” and we’ll discuss exactly that, impact.
