I know what you’re thinking just by reading the headline of this post: Of course LinkedIn is better for B2B marketing and Facebook for B2C.

But wait, that is not necessarily the case. I have to admit I’m not as active on LinkedIn as I am on Facebook, or even Google+. That’s probably because my focus on this blog is to talk to entrepreneurs and small business.

But when it comes to approach Corporate America, I automatically think I need to get out of these networks and go to LinkedIn. Some of you probably don’t know I’m also a partner at Plural and Partners, a digital agency in Los Angeles and Chile that works with brands and big ad agencies.

Even though I have established Facebook connections with some individuals, when I want to connect with people about Plural, I’m not sure that I want to poke folks on their personal profiles, it feels like I’m coming to your family BBQ on Sunday to discuss business.

On the other hands, it feels to me that LinkedIn does not offer the same level of engagement. I heard people say they never check their messages or invites to connect. I have actually sent invites that were accepted 6 months later. By then, I don’t even know who you are anymore.

But how about results? How about learning a bit more about where my prospect is hanging out, or what kind of people should I approach on LinkedIn or on Facebook. That’s the objective for this infographic from Bop Design that starts by saying that conventional wisdom says LinkedIn is better if you play in the B2B league but…

And this is what I’m taking away from it. Of course I’d love to get your thoughts on this in the comment section:

You should target individuals by their level, looks like top level execs are more likely to do “business” on LinkedIn while middle management use it to network and entry level are just looking for jobs

Regardless of the numbers, I think I will follow my intuition on where to approach people

Just because my target prospect spends more time on Facebook doesn’t mean I will add to the pile of invites, messages, likes, and other forms of digital pokes. Maybe a channel less congested will have more impact

Does this mean I will scratch Facebook from my B2B marketing strategy? Of course not, you should not ignore Facebook at all

Usually when the media talks about social media growth or when they mention a specific network, they go to the number of users.

We know Facebook has a zillion users, we know that G+ has hit 25 million. While that information is important, it’s like me saying that I have X amount of Twitter followers. In other words, you don’t get much out of it.

The reason I want to share this infographic that Search Engine Journal made public today is because it provides more interesting facts. The cool part will be to take some of that data and see how it can be useful to you. For example, did you know that 75% of brand “likes” are coming from advertisements? or that the growth of mobile access to Facebook from 2010 to 2011 is 200%.

But let’s have the infographic do the talking here:

Google to display search results based on Tweets, Bing to display Facebook and Twitter status, Facebook Fan Page and Twitter are now connected… And now, you can connect your LinkedIn to your Twitter. Is it all going to become one big network one day? I don’t know but it sure looks like we are more connected than ever.

Today, we’ll look at how to connect your LinkedIn profile to your Twitter and some of the reasons why you should or not enjoy “the peanut butter and the chocolate together”, as Biz Stone and Reid Hoffman said in their video last week (which I’m including in this post).

So let’s get to it in a step-by-step fashion as we always do:

Step 1: Go To Your LinkedInProfile

Login to your Linkedin account and go to your profile (edit). Click on the “Add Twitter account” link right below the “Websites” section.

Step 2: Let Them Do Their Thing

LinkedIn will connect to Twitter to get access to your account. Click “Allow” and just wait to get redirected back to your LinkedIn profile.

Step 3: What Kind Of Tweets Do You Want On Your Profile

You can either tell LinkedIn to display all your tweets or you have the option to use the Hashtag #in in your tweets when you want it to go to your profile. Save your settings.

Step 4: Check Your Status

Check your status to see if it’s working, if you don’t see it updated, go to Twitter and post a tweet. Go back to your LinkedIn profile, you should see it now.

That’s it if all you want is to update your LinkedIn status with your tweets. Now, if you want to bring Twitter into LinkedIn as an application, follow the next steps…

Step 5: Setup The “Tweets” Application

On the left menu, click on “Applications”, on the drop-down menu click on “Tweets”. In the next page click on the “Add Application” button.

Step 6: What Tweets To Display

Again you are asked to display all tweets or only the ones with the #in or #li Hashtags.

Step 7: You Can Now Operate Your Twitter From LinkedIn

You are set. You can view all tweets or you can view only yours. Also you can now tweet from your LinkedIn application.

But Why Should I Do This?, You Ask…

What is the point of connecting these two platforms with such different formats? Because makes sense to the future of social media and personal branding. Every day we move more towards making a living off our talents and passions, people and companies want to know what kind of work you have out there, what kind of influence, if you are a leader.

Even book deals are being signed based on what kind of follow an individual has. People are now more important.

Resumes are becoming obsolete, who you are is now in front of everybody. LinkedIn is a public resume and, I’m sorry but at least in my case, I care more about what you have to say than all those corporate titles.

The Interview

Reid Hoffman (Co-Founder of LinkedIn) and Biz Stone (Co-Founder of Twitter).
