HootSuite Publisher: Schedule And Manage Your Tweets From A Calendar

Hootsuite PublisherThe folks from HootSuite just rolled out their latest update: HootSuite Publisher.

Publisher is basically taking the old “Pending Tweets” feature that used to work as a “stream” on your dashboard into a whole new section of its own.

The main aspect of this update is that this section is allowing you to view and manage your Twitter scheduling on a calendar. Yes, a calendar like the one you use to schedule your appointments and meetings.

In this post, I’ll give you a quick tour of how it works…

Like I said, the “Pending Tweets” is replaced by a section that you can access from the menu at the left side of your dashboard.

But let’s take a step back and say that you still have the same options to schedule tweets as before, from the dashboard or from the Hootlet. If you’re not familiar with the Hootlet or you don’t use it, you’re missing out on one of the most productive social tools there is. Here are the links to install it as an extension on your Firefox or Chrome.

There is one new way to craft and schedule a tweet but we’ll talk about that in a second. Moving on!

Views

The first option is the “List” view, pretty clean and organized. This image is also good to show you that you can manage multiple accounts.

And then we have the “Calendar” view by Day, Week and Month

Filtering

Every tweet you schedule online, on the dashboard or via the Hootlet gets dumped in this calendar that you can filter by social network (usually a Twitter account) or even by team member.

Working from the Calendar

The beauty about the calendar is that it’s not just a view mode but you can actually interact with it. I mean moving tweets around or even edit them as if it was a regular calendar.

HootSuite Publisher is out and it’s available to you. Free accounts get the “List” view while “Pro” accounts enjoy the day/week/month views.

Is It Worth Going Pro?

I pay HootSuite $5.99 every month to get what you get for a free account plus a bunch of other features like enhanced reports, unlimited profiles, Google Analytics and Facebook Insights integrations and more. The calendar is just one more of the benefits of having a Pro account. Worth it? that’s a buck more than what some of us spend on a Starbucks coffee…

    Thanks for pointing out the new features in publisher.  I would be ok with it if they had left us the ability to still see the tweets in the pending streams – I have two profiles with the same picture, so it was a lot easier to see if I had the right tweets scheduled on the right accounts in two separate columns vs. having to filter between the two or show both and hover over them to see which account they belong to.

    I would be lost without HootSuite. I, too, pay the $6 each month for the additional benefits it provides.

    Thanks for the heads-up on Hootlet! Right now I’m not really liking Publisher because it takes me away from the main feeds page, but I’ll adjust.

    I think the Hootsuite Publisher Calendar view is a nice way to manage all your pending tweets, especially the drag and drop feature. Too bad it’s only available to paying clients. I still prefer @bufferapp for scheduling.

    This is one of those changes that looks good on paper but sucks in reality.  Not being able to see my Pending and Sent streams side by side is something I like, since Hootsuite has times where things don’t go out and it’s nice to be able to see that right away.

    Now Im in the Publisher then I have to go to another page to see my Sent stream..silly.

    I liked having my accounts a lil separate.. go into one, I knew everything I saw and did was for that one account.  Now its all mixed together lol

    I wish with BIG changes like this, you had the option to opt in or out.

    Great points @MoneyDummy:disqus - I do love the new calendar view, but I really miss the pending and sent columns side by side. I’m not so keen on the switching, though tend to have my Twitter profile open in another tab now.

    Thanks for the lowdown on Publisher. I have to agree with the last two comments that say while these tools can be helpful they are not a good substitution for the pending tweet stream. In conjunction with the pending tweet stream it would put Hootsuite, which is by far the best twitter client out there right now, over the top. Unfortunately the loss of the pending tweet column adds a great deal of steps to what used to be a very user friendly set-up and negates any positive features that have implemented.

     I might be wrong but I don’t believe you have to pay to use publisher. I only have the free version and have complete access to all of the publisher features.

    I just wish they added to what was there, and not remove something that has been working since the day they launched the site.

    Can you say Digg? lol  Hoot might want to learn from that mistake.

    Silly to me to just remove a big part of why I use them in the first place.. bring the Pending back.. and I can live with the changes haha

    I have always loved HootSuite in terms of design, functionality, add-ons and plugins and this Hootsuite publisher seems to be having a potential. But like the others, I also want to see the pending and sent items in the same page. I’m looking forward for better changes with Hootsuite.

    The Publisher and Pending stream are now interchangeable allowing you to schedule and manage with your preferred tool. In most cases, your previous Pending Update streams will also re-appear.

    While we were at it, we increased the limit on Batch Scheduling to 200 per social network (in batches of 50) and improved support for international character sets.
