The Zen Of Social Media Marketing by Shama Kabani The Zen Of Social Media Marketing”  by Shama Kabani just hit the stores a couple of weeks ago and I thought it would be a good idea to give it a review since I recently included her in our “20 Social Media Divas To Follow” list.

Shama Kabani

In case you don’t already know Shama, she is the president of The Marketing Zen Group, a full-service online marketing firm, host of Shama.tv, her own video blog where she provides online marketing advice and great interviews AND… if that wasn’t enough, a very well known speaker in the social media circuit.

Shama was also named one of BusinessWeek’s 25 under 25 entrepreneurs of 2009.

The Book

Right off the bat, the book sets the expectations straight about what social media does and doesn’t.

When I started reading the first chapter I got the impression the book was going to be too basic but it moves rather quickly into more intermediate issues without losing the beginner. It does the same thing on every chapter.

Shama also provides great step-by-step guides with images when explaining the 3 main social networks: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. What I like is that she goes into details and actually explaining sections of your profiles and some of the etiquette on each network.

My favorite part of the book is chapter 7 “Video: The Next Frontier” because Shama obviously is an expert when it come to video, after all she is running a successful video blog at Shama.tv. She covers everything you need to know from the equipment you need to video editing software, screen recording and her secrets for engaging the audience.

I think the book is an easy read and a very useful guide for an entrepreneur in the beginning stages of taking his/her business online or working on personal branding. I like that the book has actual stuff to learn and not just general concepts, at the end she includes 12 social media marketing case studies from actual people instead of naming the usual brands.
